Riya Sharma is a five-year-old girl from Patna, Bihar. She was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole in the heart, which has left her struggling to breathe normally and has severely limited her ability to play and go to school. Her parents, both daily-wage labourers, earn a combined income of less than ₹12,000 per month and simply cannot afford the ₹5 lakh surgery recommended by doctors at AIIMS, New Delhi.
